CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA— Constituents across California have been receiving text messages asking them to check their registration and providing links. It's bogus.
The Contra Costa County Clerk-Recorder-Elections Office said Friday that residents should beware of the texting scam.
"Our office would like the public to know that the Clerk-Recorder-Elections Office is not reaching out to constituents via text to update voter registrations," the office said in a news release.
Bay Area residents, and all Californians, can check their voter registration by contacting their county elections office or via county links and phone numbers provided by the California Secretary of State.
In Contra Costa County, anyone with questions can contact the office via email at Voter.Services@vote.cccounty.us or speak to someone by phone during regular business hours by calling 925-335-7800.
"Remember that your County Elections Office is your trusted source of election information," said Kristin B. Connelly, Contra Costa Registrar of Voters. "We are urging our residents to be vigilant and to reach out directly to the County Elections Office if you have any questions about text messages or emails that ask you to register to vote via a link that is not directed to our website.”
Residents should update their registration if they have moved to a new address, changed their name, or want to change their party affiliation, Connelly said.
Those who are not yet registered to vote can register online at the California Secretary of State website at Registertovote.ca.gov/or pick up a voter registration form at the County Elections Office, their local public library, a post office, or the California Department of Motor Vehicles.
