Contaminants of Concern

PFAS
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are manmade “forever” chemicals that are harmful to the environment and human health. PFAS was designed to resist heat, water, oil, and stains, which makes them very popular in every day products such as cookware, carpets, clothes, furniture fabrics, cosmetics, and food packaging.
As people wash, rinse, or clean products containing PFAS, the wastewater containing the chemicals enters the sewer system and travels to wastewater treatment plants, like Mt. View Sanitary District. Wastewater agencies in the Bay Area are working together to monitor and develop solutions that address emerging contaminants, like PFAS, through source control.
